2008 Welsh County Sporting Final

The 2008 Welsh Sporting County Final was held at
Griffin Lloyd Shooting Ground on April 27th 2008

Final Shoot Report (Click thumbnails for full image):

Setting off to the Inter Counties Sporting Final at Griffin Lloyd on the 27th April was quite a disheartening journey - the rain was pretty torrential and the clouds certainly didn't look as if they were about to disperse.  Nevertheless - 5 full county sporting teams arrived at Griffin Lloyd to hopefully enjoy a day of some of JK's testing targets and it seems as though they all did.

The rain stopped and even a little sun soon started coming through the clouds.

A new shooting team format was in place on the request of some the shooters and by 11.15am most the shooters were off out - equipped with wet weather gear (just in case).

The toughest stand that seemed to catch a lot of people out was "the driven" on stand 9, a real back bending pair that you needed to shoot as early as possible or else they were way over your head and behind you.  To give you an idea, only about a third of the shooters managed to hit over 50% of the targets on that stand !!!!

Some challenging crossers with the odd teal thrown in for good measure ensured some good thought provoking targets as usual from Griffin Lloyd.  There were the 'hittable' targets as well for the 'new caps'. Your first County Final is daunting enough without coming away from stand after stand with no score and it was good to see that all the juniors came away with an average final score of 68, which is highly commendable.

The seniors were starting to bring back cards with middle to high 80's scores on them but it was the Powys senior team who were consistently doing that.  Wayne Tylers score of 89 (Powys) was enough to secure him the title of overall Senior High Gun and help give Powys the winning County Shield again, a clear 29 targets in front of Dyfed.  The winning Powys team is shown below:

Powys also had the Captains Cup to add to their silverware courtesy of Pete Humphreys (shown below):

Carol Francis from Dyfed just managed to hold onto her Ladies Cup from last year with a 79, only 3 clays ahead of nearest competitor who was Cerys Evans from Gwent.  Carol is shown in the picture below alongside Rose Owen who between them took the Dyfed ladies title as well.

It was a much closer thing though with the Veterans. Three shooters, Alan Parkin and Geoff Seaborne from Gwent and Mike Lees from Gwynedd all finished on a 75 so went on to a shoot off over 5 pairs.  Alan, who was drawn first, set the standard, and whilst the other two shooters tried to equal or beat his score of 8, they were unsuccessful and it was Alan who took the Veterans High Gun.  The winning Gwent veterans team and high gun are shown below:

Three of the juniors were running neck and neck, Barry Griffiths from Powys and Tom Ball from Gwent, but it was Dyfeds Luke Llewellin who just managed to keep hold of lasts year title and trophy with a superb 81.  Dyfeds Junior team also retained last years title as well - pictured below is the victorious Dyfed junior team (junior high gun Luke Llewellin on the right).

Before Brian Davies (one of the Associations Executives) started the trophy presentations, a minutes silence was observed as it had come to the shooters attention through out the day, that Mr Frank Jones (Powys Veteran shooter) had died unexpectedly the day before the final.  Our thoughts were with his family at that difficult time.
